Buffalo, NY |
| |
Small herd feel, with
the big herd perks.

The first question
everyone seems to ask when they arrive at Buffalo
is: where are all the people? Main Street doesn't
seem so main. There are lots of empty shops, almost
no supermarkets, at first glance it seems almost
deserted. This like many first impressions is a
false one.

Before I departed
for Buffalo, I was told by many people that:
1. There is nothing there. (there is)
2. The people are not friendly (it's about 50/50)
3. I will get mugged (
I didn't)
Buffalo is a quiet,
economically depressed, but not unpleasant small
city in upstate
New York.
It has a world class fine art museum, world class
char broil, plentiful live theatre, and lots
of classic American architecture. It is close
to
Niagra
Falls (45
minutes), and
has pleasant summer weather. So if you like art, real char broiled food,
or architecture Buffalo ought to be on your list.
I could even understand someone wanting to live
there
(just not me). |

We
(myself, two sexy Romanian
girls, and a pretty Russian
girl) came
across the biker gang from hell cruising into
Buffalo.
They all hung
out, and didn't cause any trouble. What the
hell kind of
biker gang doesn't cause trouble? |

| Buffalo was once a
thriving port city on the shores of Lake Eerie. Those
days are gone. Today it is home to
a WWII Warship museum with a destroyer, a cruiser,
and an attack submarine, all of which you can board
and tour for about 8 bucks. |

Hooliator
stayed at the HI Buffalo Hostel on Main Street.
I stayed in the room on the top floor all the way
back on the left, rear left top bunk. Those are
my bags you can see in pic.
The hostel was clean, the staff was friendly, especially
Mike who made everybody feel quite literaly at
home. My only gripe is that the showers have no
privatre changing stall. Actually the bathroom
on the 1st floor has an external curtain around
the shower.
There's a market nearby with reasonable prices
and really good brewed coffee. The post office
is right behind the hostel as well.

| Overall I would say Buffalo is a bit sleepy.
Elmwood Ave is pretty cool if you go far enough north.
The nice part is clear off the map provided by the hostel,
it takes about 45 minutes walking to get there. But once
you are there there are some really cool shops like the
DVD shop where you can find films you didn't know were
on DVD. There's also a not-for-profit shop which specializes
in latin American handcrafts and passes the profits back
to the artisans. Check out my page on architecture and
the page on food for more on Buffalo. It's a nice city
and worth a 3 day weekend. |
