Toronto is Totally Gay

Toronto has been hailed as the San Francisco of the North. That is if SF were flat and in Canada it would be Toronto.

What Hooliator likes about Toronto, is the people. During Hooliator's world travels he has encountered many people. Almost without exception the nicest, most respectful, most courteous people I have met have come from Toronto. Dennis the Russian and the sweet and smiley Joy who attended crappy Dauphine with me in Paris came from Toronto. Vincenzo my unofficial tour guide in Rome came from Toronto. Christine who walked all over Rome with me on the hottest day in June came from Toronto. Anne who married and then kidnapped my best friend came from Toronto. Blue haired Katie who helped me get from the airport to downtown Toronto came from Toronto.

Toronto is a medium sized, but growing city in Ontario Canada. On the surface it looks to be a typical New England city. However keeping with the great Hooliator.net tradition of delving deeply just below the surface of things, I will show you things you would only find by getting off the tour bus and putting some miles on your shoes.

Toronto public transport includes a limited subway, a limited tramway, and buses which cover most of the city. To take the bus from the airport to downtown it will cost you about $3.75 including transfers to subway and tram.

The bus in the hiding photo is the one you take from the airport to the subway so you can get to downtown Toronto.

Toronto has a growing traffic problem. Common wisdom would suggest that increased use of public transport would alleviate the congestion. However in Toronto, the PT has been implemented in a way which actually increases congestion. The trams share the same space as automobiles and serve to prevent the free flow of traffic. Of course if you happen to be on the tram, it isn't so annoying.

There are a lot of new buildings going up in Toronto these days with quite a lot of old ones in the immediate vicinity. It also has a pleasant Marina on the shores of Lake Ontario where you can have a little picnic on the docks.

The most recognizable thing in Toronto is the space need...err, CN Tower. It's not much use as navigational reference because being round, it looks the same from all directions. It costs $23 to go up and look out the window. Which is why you won't find even one photo taken from the space...CN Tower on this site.

One of the other most recognizable features of the SF of the North is the overwhelming number of advertisements. I came to call Toronto "Kit Kat City" because every third building is graced by a billboard advertising said candy.

Toronto is divided into several distinct regions. Each with it's own flavor and specialty.

Downtown, which differs from other city's downtown districts by not a hell of a lot.

The Path, is essentially an underground shopping mall which stretches literally from one end of the city to the other and doubles as another Downtown during the snowy Canadian winter. So that even on the coldest days you can walk pretty much anywhere without ever getting your feet wet.

The Art District, which is a row of shops, galleries, artisans, and parks about 2 miles long characterized by colorful wall art and the occasional street performer.

And Hooliator's favorite part of Toronto, Kensington Market where you can buy all kinds of whole foods, breads, shoes, clothing, and ideally coffee. Click on the photo to see the world famous Mr. Verg perform live on the streets of Toronto.
