Most of the ancient columns
are like
Rome itself, fallen.
While the columns in the important
temples and residences were made of solid marble,
the ones in more functional buildings were often
made of brick with a decorative marble facade.
The colosseum wasn't
the only arena in town. Some were fully enclosed.
Which would have
been nice during winter or for special events. Just
try to imagine it as a great hall lined with scores
of coumns with an arena in the center.
Some of the solid
marble columns didn't hold up so well and are today
held together with copper
banding or spikes.
