This is the world
famous Roman Colosseum where ancient "games" were
held and where losers didn't often get a chance
at rematch.
The tunnels and rooms you see used to be covered
by an arena floor. The animals and gladiators were
kept below the arena before the competitions.
Some of
the tunnels were actually water channels because
they would flood the arena and have mock sea battles
with little galleys.
The lions have since evolved into a smaller species
which still roam the Colosseum's tunnels and chambers.
To give an idea of what it used to
be like a new floor was constructed over part of
the tunnel complex.
The whole thing is very impressive, especially when
you realize not only that it was built over 2000
years ago, but that it was built of brick and mortar
and has survived countless earthquakes.
