Once you've found my little coffee
spot, this old portico is not far off. Walk along
the hill crest until you come to some stairs (past
the house) leading down into the trees. Follow them.
“you never know when you
might be traveling some place and a fence might
get in your way.” (Ceremony, L.M. Silko)
If you are agile, you
can hop this very spiky and very sharp fence
at the gate
near the portico
into some botanical gardens (they
suck). Or you
can continue along the trail which will lead
to a dull little street and to some more stairs.
There's a really cool little
baroque artisan just outside the gardens. Which
you will miss if you
take the non-deadly route. Which reminds me...
the fence is sharp enough to really really hurt
you. I spiked my hand going over because I thought I heard a car.
This very typical little Roman via
(via means street) is
at the very bottom of the second stairs mentioned
above. It leads to a nice
little shopping/eating area. You can also get there
via the gardens, it just takes a little longer. The
arch is what you will find if you risk death or serious
injury on the fence.
The Tiber river still has some of its
natural river banks inside the city. Periodically
you can see the remains of ancient artificial banks
under the waters.
Avoid walking along the banks if you
are alone. There are some fairly assertive homeless
who make their, err, homes under the bridges. The
homeless in Rome are not as polite as their Parisien
cousins. (again keeping with the 'opposites' theme)
A picture is worth a thousand words.
I think the old one is prettier than the new one.
