Still Walking

Hooliator's Walk

After what was beginning to feel like way too much walking I reached St. Laurent sur Mer which is where some of the heaviest fighting of D-Day took place. You can still see giant holes (in peoples backyards even) where the big booms happened. There's also a fairly good quality hotel for less than €35 just at the top of the hill. Conveniently enough, it's also the only hotel at the top of the hill. This was where I learned that not all French people are incredibly stuck up. It was my first experience of a French person actually making an effort to accomadate my poor French speaking/understanding skills while actually speaking French. And what's more, it happened a lot in Normandy. It literally never happened in Paris (not even once).

On the way I saw "la Manche" and found a very hilly village where I made friends with a dog who tried to leave with me - twice. I also saw my first village watering hole or whatever they call it. It's where the entire village used to come for water before they got indoor plumbing. Which in France would have been about 1993.

The hotel I mentioned earlier is near this medieval grain silo.

France has some of the most beautiful parks and gardens I've ever seen. This was someone's private garden in St. Laurent sur Mer. If you are a car-o-phile you won't ever see this (or a lot of other things that are worth seeing). The cow was somewhere else. But I stuck it here cuz I did.

Walking through fields one must be careful. Keep your dog for rent and your eyes open. (incidentally there are TWO snakes in the photo)

And the road winds on...

By the way that smashed thing used to belong to some Germans who lived here back in the forties.
