Crosses & Phantoms

I haven't much to say about the American Cemetery in Normandy. Only that it was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. While the French tourists were running and goofing around laughing, Americans moved about somberly with tremendous respect for the unbelievable number of dead soldiers. I found the sheer number of graves to be overwhelming. Thousands upon thousands of American dead, most killed in June or July of 1944.

I find it a bit disheartening to listen to people talking about the war in Iraq and saying how we are taking heavy casualties because we've lost 3,000 soldiers in 3 years. We lost about 3,000 soldiers in the first 3 hours of the Battle of Normandy. Most of them lay in this place.

The monument.

The crosses and Stars of David line up perfectly from no matter where you view them.

Here we have a stunning example of one American serviceman paying homage to another. I don't believe the two were related.
