Communications within the Empire

If you are ever in need of emergency facilities, just look for one of those bright red boxes located on most streets. Most of these contain telephones. However, don’t be at all concerned about the phone ringing while you are doing your business because London Public Telephones DO NOT EVER WORK.

They are a lot like slot machines in fact, with the notable difference that with slot machines you sometimes get something back after you put your money in. Long story short, don’t put money into them, the call will not go through, or if it does go through the party you are calling will not be able to hear you, and it is absolutely possible it will simply take your money and not even pretend to call out. The coin return slots are purely decorative.

As an added bonus, some of the newer public phones run on Microsoft Windows. The first windows-phone I ever saw is pictured here. Note please that the phone crashed. The Tic-Tac-Toe feature, however worked flawlessly. Windows NT security

But if you need to make a call, all is NOT lost. I spent 10 limeybucks to learn the hard way. If you are wise you will learn for much less. IF you take my advice and stay at the Piccadilly Hotel, then there are some very expensive payphones on each floor. I saw people with phone cards using them. But I would not put actual money into them if I were you.

There is a better alternative if you have only to make a local call to a pretty girl who is studying to be a lawyer (hi Swati!)

ringing phone

Go to the Internet Café on Piccadilly Street next to St. James Church. It’s about an 8 minute walk from the hotel. The cost is about 0.30 limeybucks per minute if you are calling a local cell phone. That is significantly cheaper than the rate for the public phones. Especially when you consider that the phones at the internet café actually work.

Gittin to the Internet Café:

From Piccadilly Circus, go down Piccadilly Street (to the right of Tower Records). About 150 yards or so down you will see St. James Church on the left. The Internet Café is in the Alley on the side closest to Piccadilly Circus. There is a row of red toilet boxes near the door. You can also buy phone cards there.
