Stuff I like That's (mostly) Free

Every now and again Hooliator stumbles across something that makes his life easier. Hooliator is a bit naive and he sometimes thinks that other people may find it helpful too, so he lists it on his website. This is one of those nows.

In this now Hooliator will compile a short list of (mostly) FREE software which he has found useful, fun, or simply not annoying. (Hooliator is easily annoyed)

If you want to grab any of these I provide links to the site of the software provider where you can download the software and get all the information you could ever hope for.

This short list will be compiled alphabetically by function.

Game
Okay, there's only one game.... but it's fun in a goofy kind of way.

Chicken
Invaders!!!
"Earth is being invaded by chickens from another galaxy, bent on revenge against the human race for its oppression of earth chickens! You are the only one standing in the way of total annihilation of the human race!"

Information Enhancers
These make collecting and sorting information easier. Hooliator prefers simple over complicated.

EditPad
Lite

EditPad is technically a text editor. But I use it for everything from my daily "to do" list to starting web pages (this page was started in EditPad). There is also a Pro version tailored to programmers or people who like really functional stuff.

JGSoft
Just Great software

FreeMind

Freemind is "mind mapping" software. Basically it's a way of organizing your thoughts into a Tree structure. I've made a page for Freemind so you can see what it does, and I've included a downloadable mindtree which I have made about the Paris Metro system.

PDF Software
These are applications that work with Adobe PDF files. (Who woulda thunk?)

Acrobat Reader
Version 5

The current version of Acrobat Reader is version x > 5. Version five is the one before they started adding the "intelligent" (read: annoying) features like automatic update. Five also loads a lot faster. Adobe is one of the only companies considerate enough to provide older versions of their software. Corporate courtesy is RARE. It's one (of many) reason (s) why Hooliator likes Adobe.
Adobe®

PDF reDirect

This is a really cool little applet which works like a printer. Except instead of printing to archaic tree-hating paper, it prints to tree-loving PDF format. So you can creat PDF files out of Word documents or even web pages. This program is Shareware. There is a free version and a not free version.
EXP-Systems

PDFill

Don't you just love filling out 3 million identical forms? Or if you are really clever you can just fill out one and photocopy the rest. And if you are really really clever you use PDFill and and just hit print. The free version leaves a watermark on all the printed files. But the paid version only cost 20 bucks!

Scientific Stuff
This is geek stuff. If you have already read this far, it's for you.

Periodic Table
of the Elements
I wish I had had this when I was studying chemistry in junior college. How much easier my life would have been. This table comes in 7 languages including Deutsch, Français, ehSpanish, Portuguese, Wo..errr.. Italian, Croatian, and good ole fashioned English. It calculates mole masses, physical state change with temperature, it has a chemical calculator, and lots of other stuff I don't even know what it is. If you are studying chemistry, you need this. If you are not studying chemistry and you are still reading this then you have way too much free time.

Newton's
Aquarium
This is one of those rare gems. I think I spent about 3 weeks locked in my room making stars collide and learning how not to make planets spin out of orbit. What was really cool was when I figured out how to make a binary star system that actually worked. Luke was lucky he didn't get flung off into the outer reaches of space or baked as his planet zipped between the suns. By now you should have the idea that this is basically a goldfish bowl, only with astral bodies. It's a lot of fun, it's addictive, it's educational, and it's only 20 bucks. (30 day free trial period)
